Mahindra India has launched the Thar in India. It was already available in Europe and South Africa from last 2 years. The Thar has captured the imagination of off-roading enthusiasts in India. Its looks and features have gone down well with the general public. Mahindra showcased the Thar at the 2010 Auto Expo in New Delhi. On the outside, the Indian 4x4 keeps its masculine, square jaw signature look, which has been a favorite among its owners. The Jeep-like round headlights and its signature style slotted grille make for a bold statement at the front. According to the company, the Thar has an approach angle of 46 degree and a departure angle of 30 degree with 200mm (7 inches) ground clearance, so it clearly means business when it comes to off-roading. But this is no stripped-out spartan vehicle, as it comes as standard with luxury features like air-conditioning (CRDe variant 4X4), power steering, independent front suspension, as well as stabilizer bars that guarantee limitless off-roading. Mahindra Thar is available with two engine options: CRDe and Di. The Thar CRDe is powered by a 2.5 litre diesel engine which develops maximum power of 105 Bhp at 3800 rpm and maximum torque of 247 Nm at 1800 rpm. Thar Di is powered by a 2.5 litre diesel engine which develops maximum power of 63 Bhp at 3200 rpm and maximum torque of 180 Nm at 1440 rpm. A ground clearance of 200mm, four wheel drive and a fully articulated suspension means that the Mahindra Thar meets all the off-roading criteria enthusiasts were so hoping for. This Jeep like a true blue off-roader will seat just two persons. The engine is coupled with a five speed manual gear box. Mahindra Thar can easily impress 4×4 lovers who don’t want shell out their hard earned money in gas guzzling machines.
